Sergino Dest sent off for USMNTDefender picked up two yellows in 20 secondsTeammates furious with him as he left pitchGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?
In the heat of the moment, Dest was sent off for two yellow cards within a 20-second gap, both for dissent. Initially, he punted the ball into the stands, and then followed it up by saying something that the match official took exception to. Multiple USMNT teammates tried to pull Dest away, but he stubbornly threw himself back into the situation, refusing to listen. Walking off the pitch, some of the players gave him an earful, with Tim Ream full-on yelling in his face.

Dest's decision making in that moment was inexcusable, and just minutes after his removal, Trinidad leveled the match. The USMNT were seemingly on their way to victory the moment they opened the scoring halfway through the first half as the home side couldn't even get a hold of the ball. However, due to the removal of the PSV defender, Gio Reyna had to be subbed off and the effects were immediately seen.

After falling 2-1 in Trinidad, the USMNT qualified for the 2024 Copa America and the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals. However, Dest will now be suspended for the next match – and possibly longer – with it unclear if Gregg Berhalter will choose to discipline him further.
